Extraordinary Greatness = Peyton Manning

Posted by: Mary Beth Braun   |   Monday, March 12, 2012

Extraordinary is being exceptional to a very marked extent.

Greatness is being remarkable in magnitude, degree, or effectiveness.

Coupled together in extraordinary greatness and you get Peyton Manning, made famous not only by being the Indianapolis Colts Quarterback and four time MVP, but by being an extraordinary human being.

No doubt his records on the football field will catapult him into Hall of Fame status and gain him many other accolades. After many seasons of records, including one Superbowl win, I am not reading or hearing the reports of his greatness, but hearing, ad nauseum, who will replace him and why this is a good thing for the Colts.

While I understand that the NFL is a business, what happened to appreciating the member of the team who helped lead your franchise to greatness?  This reminds me that simply showing gratitude and saying thank you can go a long way.   In fact, I believe it is much better than the ad nauseam speculation of "we may be replacing you and don't let the door hit you on the way out."

I believe that we should all look beyond Peyton's football success and let the rest of his life be a testament to living a life of extraordinary greatness.   Off the field, Peyton Manning will eventually go down in history as much for his efforts off the field as his efforts on.

  • He is a member of a supportive family, is a husband, father, brother and, I can only assume, a great friend.
  • He lends his name to a Children's Hospital
  • He has a foundation that provides leadership and growth opportunities for children at risk
  • He has Project 18 which encourages kids to be healthy and active in a effort to fight children's obesity
  • He has Scholastic Book Club where he partners with Scholastic Books to promote reading and learning in children
  • He has The Manning Passing Academy (owned and operated by Archie, Cooper, Peyton, and Eli Manning) which provides top notch instruction to high school athletes from across the country
  • He provides the Peyton Manning Scholarship which is presented to a first-year student participating in the University of Tennessee Honors Program.

So, as I look at this one person's life, I am encourage to look beyond his amazing records on the football field, the media, NFL and all the speculation of putting this person out of work as an NFL Quarterback to see his extraordinary greatness.

With this example, I am encouraged to live my own life extraordinarily and, hopefully, with greatness.

The question remains, are you living your life with extraordinary greatness?
