Loosely translated from Sanskrit, yoga means to yoke or to unite. While there are many types and forms of yoga practice, hatha yoga serves as the foundation. Hatha yoga is a combination of postures (asanas) and breathing (pranayama).
Developed by Jon Kabat Zinn, the signature mindfulness based stress reduction (MBSR) program recommends gentle hatha yoga.
The movement and breathing in yoga practice does many beneficial things for the body and mind:
- Improves flexibility
- Increases blood flow
- Calms your nervous system
- Boosts immunity
- Improves balance
You can begin with a few postures and breathing on your own or attend a formal yoga class.
Be sure to let the instructor know your level of experience and any injuries you have so he/she may help you if necessary.
